The Love at the Centre of the Universe
"The Trinity is not a puzzle to solve. It is a relationship to enter."
The Trinity can often feel like one of the most difficult Christian doctrines to understand. Yet the Bible presents it not as a puzzle to solve, but as a relationship to enter.
In this Trinity Sunday message, James reflects on Isaiah's vision of God's greatness and Jesus' command to baptise in the name of the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. Together, these readings reveal a God who is both beyond our imagination and wonderfully close.
Drawing on the ancient idea of perichoresis (the mutual indwelling of Father, Son, and Holy Spirit), the image of the divine dance, and Andrei Rublev's famous icon of the Trinity, this sermon explores how God's eternal life is one of perfect love and communion.
Most importantly, we discover that through Jesus we are invited to share in that life. The circle of divine love is not closed. There is room for us at the table.
